President's Message Autumn 2023
Greetings! Welcome to the Autumn 2023 update of the South Buxton Cemetery Association. Year in Review: It has been a fantastic year for the SBCA, the cemetery, and our members. Our heartfelt thanks go out to our dedicated cemetery team, including Superintendent John Myers, Jim Michie, Peter Ciaramella, and others who played crucial roles throughout the year. Landscaping improvements: Our stewards successfully implemented a Weed, Feed, and Grub Control Program across the entire cemetery landscape, completing the initiative on schedule despite facing the challenge of excessive rainfall this year. The unprecedented rain led to rapid grass growth, necessitating frequent moving and trimming. As a result, the cemetery now looks better than it has in the past 18 years — a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. Tree Removal and Maintenance: Colonial Tree, led by Ira Stockwell and crew, addressed several significant tree-related and safety concerns in the cemetery. This included the removal of a large, over 200-year old maple located in the Moses Dunn Section, a project that required specialized equipment, fence removal and repairs, and landscaping — all executed efficiently and professionally by Jim Michie and his crew. The total cost for tree work exceeded $10,000 this year. Although we have budgeted and spent over $3,000 annually, this area will continue to be a necessary ongoing expense. Infrastructure Project: We initiated a significant project, starting with Phase One, focusing on design and construction in the Route 112 area. This phase began at Kate Douglas Wiggin Ave. and extended north, improving parking, enhancing entrance areas, modifying culverts, and ensuring safe and pleasant access to the cemetery on both Woodman Ave. and Narragansett Ave. We are thrilled to report that Phase One not only met but exceeded our expectations, thanks to the exemplary work of Peter, Nick, and Phil Pinkham, concluding below the estimated cost. Fundraising for Phase Two: We are now excited to embark on fundraising for Phase Two of the project, estimated to cost around $10,000. All donations towards this significant initiative are gratefully accepted. The project is entirely funded by the SBCA, and we look forward to your continued support. SBCA Director Changes: Barry Sargent and Lary Owen after serving years as dedicated directors, decided to retire their seat to allow others an opportunity to participate in the success of the SBCA. Robert Yarumian and Chris Sargent were tasked with this opportunity. A hearty welcome to Bob and Chris. Cemetery Beautification: The addition of 2000 daffodil bulbs was gifted and planted in the Woodman and Moses Dunn section of the SBC. Beverly & Sandy Atkinson, donors, were assisted by Nancy Connoly and Eric Krimes in the planting. Looking forward to a fantastic spring bloom. Wreaths Across America December 16, 2023. Wreaths will be placed at veteran monuments. Gather at the cemetery office at 9:00am for distribution and instructions. Wreaths Across America Memorial Program, SBC Woodman Section at 12:00pm. Your participation and donations make this a community favorite program. Order forms and additional information attached. . Warm Regards, Richard "Sandy" Atkinson, President- South Buxton Cemetery Association
